St. Anthony Main Engagement Session

Minneapolis has so many stunning locations, and I was thrilled when K+J chose it for their fall engagement session. We started at Boom Island Park and made our way south toward St. Anthony Main, enjoying the crisp autumn air and the soft colors of the season. As golden hour approached, we finished at the Stone Arch Bridge, where the warm light created the perfect purple glow for their photos. Wandering the city with these two and capturing their connection was such a joy, and I’m already looking forward to documenting their wedding next summer!

I intentionally include complimentary engagement sessions with wedding bookings because they’re such a valuable opportunity for us to connect ahead of the big day. It’s a chance to ease any nerves about being in front of the camera and for couples to experience how I work. My goal is always to create an environment where couples feel comfortable and confident being themselves. That’s when the most authentic and meaningful moments come to life—and K+J made it so easy to capture theirs.

Tips for an Engagement Session in Minneapolis

Planning your engagement session in Minneapolis offers endless opportunities for stunning backdrops and memorable photos. With its mix of natural beauty, urban charm, and seasonal variety, the city provides the perfect canvas for your love story. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your session:

1. Choose the Right Location: Minneapolis is full of incredible spots, so think about what resonates with you as a couple. Do you love the energy of the city? Consider locations like Boom Island Park, the Stone Arch Bridge, or St. Anthony Main for skyline views and urban vibes. Prefer something more natural? The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, Minnehaha Falls, or the Chain of Lakes offer lush greenery and scenic beauty. Love museums? There’s plenty to choose from — just plan ahead and check their rules around posed photography.

2. Time It Right: Lighting makes all the difference. Golden hour—just after sunrise or before sunset—is ideal for soft, flattering light and a romantic glow. If you prefer quieter locations, consider a weekday morning to avoid crowds at popular spots.

3. Dress Comfortably: Wear outfits that reflect your personality while complementing each other’s style. Layers work great in cooler months, and flowing fabrics add movement to photos. Bring a second outfit for variety—one casual and one a bit more dressed up—to create diverse looks.

4. Embrace the Seasons: Minneapolis shines year-round, so lean into the season of your session. Fall offers warm, earthy tones and crisp air. Winter creates cozy, magical vibes (bonus: blankets or hot cocoa props!). Spring brings blossoms, and summer provides lush greenery and vibrant energy.

5. Plan for Walking: Many of the best locations in Minneapolis involve a bit of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. Bring a pair of walking shoes for in-between shots if you’re wearing heels or dress shoes to avoid blistering.

6. Bring Personal Touches: Incorporate elements that make your session uniquely yours. Whether it’s your dog, a picnic blanket, or something tied to your hobbies, these personal details help tell your story.

7. Prepare for the Weather: Minneapolis weather can be unpredictable, so check the forecast and plan accordingly. A clear umbrella can save a rainy day session, and layers will keep you warm on cooler days.

8. Be Flexible: Minneapolis is a bustling city, which means there can be unexpected surprises like construction, road closures, or local events that might affect your session. Embrace the adventure and trust your photographer to adapt! Sometimes these changes can lead to discovering unexpected, beautiful spots or adding a unique twist to your photos.

9. Communicate With Your Photographer: Share your vision and any must-have shots with your photographer ahead of time. If you have a specific location in mind, let them know why it’s meaningful to you. They can also suggest hidden gems or the best spots based on lighting and. time of day. Collaboration ensures your session feels personal and authentic.

10. Relax and Have Fun: The best photos come when you’re genuinely enjoying yourselves. Treat your engagement session like a date—laugh, snuggle, and enjoy the time together. Trust your photographer to guide you and focus on connecting with your partner.

By following these tips, your Minneapolis engagement session is sure to be a beautiful, stress-free experience that perfectly captures your love.
