Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Engagement Session
When I was planning Sonia and Peter’s engagement session with them, the initial plan was to do some fly fishing at a creek they frequent. We were so excited for this, however, the summer weather in Minnesota is fickle. After some inclement weather delays, we decided to turn our sights to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center. Still, rain thwarted us time and time again, delaying us to the point we doubted we were going to get a sunny session, but luck was with us! It just so happened to be the same day as Pride too! The gardens were full of people smiling, music filling the air. The sky threatened us with moody clouds, but the rain held off for the entire session. The lighting was phenomenal and I had so much fun taking these; this location just lends so much to the creative juices. Sonia and Peter also did wonderfully in front of the camera.
Nature has always been a great source of comfort throughout my life, it allows me to simply exist in the moment, to slow down. For some people, it can be really difficult to relax in front of the camera, which is why I favor longer sessions outdoors. I intentionally block out three hours for my couples sessions. Sure, it could be quicker, but I’ve learned through experience it’s best not to rush the magic that happens once flow state hits. The first hour is reserved for the warm-up. Nerves are shed like deadweight as we meander whatever trail we’re on, following the light, searching for the next frame. It’s around hour two where personalities really start to shine. It’s just you and your love (and my bear spray, in case we’re up north, haha!) These kinds of sessions are focused on the connection you’ve cultivated together, the very reason our paths even crossed in the first place. But no pressure (seriously.) It’s essentially a date, and I’m just “chaperoning” or documenting! These are my favorite kinds of sessions to do for couples. I’m always happy to help plan a unique session that honors your story most authentically.
The entire three hour session was done outdoors, but if you’re interested in going inside for part of your session I would plan ahead and be flexible! Photography permits at the Walker Art Center are given out on weekdays only, on a first-come, first-served basis. It costs $50, granting you access and one hour within the permitted public spaces. Groups are limited to five people; after that, extra permits and fees apply. And only two permits are given out per hour, to ensure spaces don’t get overcrowded. If that’s something you’re interested in, feel free to reach out and I’d be happy to assist with the logistics. Smaller sessions like this are always delivered within two weeks.
Please, enjoy Sonia and Peter’s engagement photos! I thoroughly enjoyed taking them.
